Day 1: The Holy City
We depart early in the morning from your resort hotel for our first stop in Kairouan – the 4th holiest city in Islam after Mecca and a UNESCO World Heritage site: visit the Great Mosque, the Mosque of the Three Doors in the Medina and Kairouan’s souks. Next we travel to Gafsa – centre of the profitable Phosphate industry. Gafsa is a modern town with some important Roman relics. . Take lunch in Gafsa before continuing your journey south towards the Sahara and the oasis town of Tozeur. There will be time for an optional horse and carriage ride to the oasis – (supplement payable via the tour guide) before dinner and overnight at a 4 star hotel in tozeur.

Day 2: Tozeur to Douz
After breakfast we take you to the railway station at Metlaoui for your train journey through the Gorges of Selja aboard the Red Lizard. The six coach train, including the Bey’s private coach, has a bar car where refreshments are available for purchase. At the end of this 90 minute journey of spectacular scenery we stop for lunch in Tozeur. In the afternoon travel continue by  across the Chott El Jerid Salt Lake to the Sahara gateway town of Douz.  Dinner and overnight at a 4 star hotel in DOUZ , with the opportunity to join a sunset camel ride into the Sahara (supplement payable via the tour guide).

Day3: Berber Heritage to El Djem
Matmata is our first stop after breakfast – home to the Troglodyte cave dwellers. Here you can visit a family home and the Hotel Sidi Driss which featured in the original Star Wars movie. Then travel to the maritime oasis town of Gabes where you can visit the Spice Market. Take lunch in Gabes then continue your journey north, via Sfax, to the town of El Djem. You will have the opportunity for a guided tour of the spectacular Roman amphitheatre. Arrive back at your resort hotel in the early evening.
