Guatemala, A Road Less Travelled (8n/9d)


This tour takes in a number of Guatemala’s less travelled byways and scenic spots

This exhilarating multi-sport itinerary takes you off the beaten path to explore Guatemala like few can! The tour offers climbing an active volcano, takes you deep into the remote & traditional Mayan highlands where you will bike through spectacular volcanic scenery on local trade routes and see remote, colorful local markets. Stay in a local homestay to learn more about the typical way of life here and visit the Maya God Maximon after kayaking on the high altitude lake of Lake Atitlan with her majestic volcanoes and then climb temples in the jungle at the world famous site of Tikal.


Day 1: Sat: Arrival and transfer to Antigua
We will meet guests off their flight and transfer them to the beautiful city of Antigua. Antigua 1N • Transfer time 1 hour

Day 2: Sun: Comalapa Market, Alaska biking and hiking (B,L,D)
Guests will be on a short transfer to bring clients to the town of San Juan Comalapa, which is famous for its local market. Once there we will have time to wander through the market and admire the native painters. After lunch enjoy hiking and biking down to Totonicapan. In this town guests will spend the evening and overnight with local families. Totonicapan with ladino families 1N • Market visit 2 hours • Mountain Biking (2 hours, 15km/9miles, 300mts/1000 feet gain, 700 mts/2310 feet loss) • Transfer time 4 hours

Day 3: Mon: Hike & Bike Zunil Ridge (B,L,D)
Today we transfer guests even deeper into the Guatemalan highlands to the spectacular Zunil mountain range where you will enjoy stunning views. At times guests will be able to see ten volcano peaks at the same time whilst hiking and biking! During the bike ride guests will stop at a remote local village and presence weaving arts. After lunch guests will be transferred to the shores of Lake Atitlan. Overnight at Lake 2N • Hiking (2 hours, 5miles/8kms moderate up and down, 350mts/1165 feet gain, , 350mts/1165 feet loss) • Biking: (1  hours, 10 miles/ 16kms, 250mts/825feet gain, 700mts/2310 feet loss) • Transfer time 3 hours

Day 4: Tues: Kayak and Hike Cerro de Oro at Lake Atitlan (B,L,D)
This morning guests will kayak on what many have called, “the most beautiful lake in the world”, Lake Atitlan. Guests pass by local fishermen, indigenous Maya women doing their washing and men working in the fields wearing their famous embroidered Santiago shorts as well as enjoying views of the three lake volcanoes. Once at Cerro de Oro guests will hike this impressive hill and on the top of this sacred hill. Sometimes guests can witness Mayan rituals in process which is an amazing and authentic glimpse of local Mayan life in this area. Enjoy the great views of the whole lake and the surrounding volcanoes from the top of this hill. When guests are ready they will be transferred back to our lodge on local pick up trucks.  After lunch guests will visit the town of Santiago, this lively Tzutuhil Maya town with its market and its strange Maya God, “ Maximon”. Locals revere and perform rituals in front of Maximon to bring good luck – or bad! • Kayaking (1-2 hours, 4 miles/7 kms) • Hiking (1.5 hours, 300 mts/1000 feet elevation gain/loss, 2 miles/3.34 kms) • Transfer time 1 hour

Day 5: Wed: Coffee farm biking and hiking, transfer to Antigua (B,L,D)
Transfer to the unique and gorgeous farm of los Tarales on the slopes of giant Atitlan volcano. Learn about the coffee procession and have a peak around in the tropical plants nursery. This is a real living farms as it has its own school and a habituated village. Explore the area by bike. Overnight in Antigua 2N • Hiking (1.5 hours, 300 mts/1000 feet elevation gain/loss,4  miles/6.6 kms) • Transfer time 3 hours

Day 6: Thurs: Pacaya Volcano Hike( (B,L,D)  
Guests will have breakfast with the tour leader before they will be transferred to Pacaya National Park where we will begin our hiking ascent of this famous, active volcano! The hike takes around 2.5 hours and at the top you can see down into the crater to the lava as well as experience the energy of an active volcano. On the return to Antigua, you can enjoy a fun guided tour through the colonial city. Dinner in one of the many local restaurants. • Transfer time (2+ hours R/T) • Pacaya Volcano Hike (3-4 hours, 500 meters/1640 feet elevation gain / drop)

Day 7: Fri Transfer to Guatemala City, Flight to Peten, Zip line adventure Jungle Hike and Temples (B,L,D)
Today guests will be transferred to Guatemala City and for their flight to the northern rainforest in the Peten. A short drive brings guests deep into the rainforest to the shore of Tikal. Enjoy time at the pool and lunch before starting our jungle trek ending at the complex called “Mundo Perdido” for the sunset. Overnight at Tikal National Park 1N • Transfer to Guatemala City (1 hour) • Guatemala City-Flores flight (less than 1 hour) • Transfer time Peten (1.5 hours) • Jungle Trek at Tikal (Up to 3 hours)

Day 8: Sat: Tikal and Zip line adventure (B,L)
Today guests will take a guided tour of the famous Maya temple site in the jungle. Lunch is included at a local restaurant. Afternoon transfer to the airport for evening flight to Guatemala City. At the airport guests will be met by their driver for the transfer to their hotel. The rest of the evening is free to enjoy the nightlife of Guatemala City or Antigua. Overnight in Guatemala City or Antigua. • Tikal private tour (half day) • Zip line adventure 1.5 hours • Transfer time 2hours • Note: You have your choice of staying in Antigua or Guatemala City on this last night..

Day 9 Sun: Departure (B)
Guests will be met at their hotel by their driver to transfer them to the airport in plenty of time for your international flight out.
